Novus Learning Center

The Learning Center is a 6,000 square foot corporate retreat and off-site meeting facility. It was designed under the Living Building Challenge guidelines. As such it was envisioned to act as a teaching and demonstration structure for the nearby community, corporate clients and business community in the region.

The building features a large open meeting space to seat up to 300 people in lecture-style seating and 200 people at tables and chairs. A catering kitchen, restrooms and storage areas make up the remaining spaces on the main level.

Some unique features of the building that responded to Living Building Challenge were as follows:

  • solar collectors to provide hot water for radiant heating and building hot water needs
  • photovoltaic array to provide all of the electrical needs in the building
  • composting toilets which use virtually no water for their process
  • water tanks for storm water collection for use on site
  • salvaged wood barn frame to act as the main roof structure for the building
  • salvaged barn wood siding for the wood scrim that covered the entire building envelope
