Greensburg

The city of Greensburg, Kansas was destroyed by a F5 tornado in the spring of 2007 leveling over 95% of the city. Presently Greensburg (home of the largest hand dug well) has made a commitment to sustainable design technologies.

With this new direction and strict building regulations, AD:ARCH stepped up to provide a housing design solution for a sustainable three bedroom residence. The .Gale House. was developed to be a unique housing solution that will withstand a future F5 tornado while incorporating passive solar strategies. The house was constructed of insulated recycled concrete blocks that provide the strength to withstand a tornado and was oriented to take advantage of sun angles, shading and cross prevailing winds. Following the tornado most of the larger trees were either removed or remain so damaged that there is no real shading available. The trellis wrapping up and over the house provides a high level of sun shading and wind deflection.
